Academic, cultural, and community partnerships rooted in collaboration and exchange.

Since the early days, our collaborations have centred on translation and cross-cultural exchange – celebrating the ways language and theatre connect us across borders.

Our partnerships span academic institutions, cultural organisations, and grassroots groups. Many have grown directly from our work with translated plays – through productions, events, research, and practical workshops. Some begin with a single event and grow into long-term relationships. What unites them is shared curiosity, mutual respect, and a commitment to meaningful collaboration.

Academic collaboration has long been part of our practice – particularly when it intersects with translation, performance, and creative research.

  • University College London – our very first translation project with the Scandinavian Department, exploring two short plays by Strindberg
  • The AHRC-funded Schnitzler Digital Edition Project – developing an adaptation of Professor Bernhardi with researchers from UCL, Cambridge, and Bristol
  • King’s College London and Language Acts & Worldmaking – on rehearsed readings, including Electra in the Forest of Oma and Unterstadt.
  • The Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies (ILCS) – on Making Theatre in Exile, exploring texts and lyrics from the Lanterndl Theatre during WWII

We’ve also hosted placements – some through the former Erasmus+ scheme – from institutions across the UK and Europe, including:

  • Goldsmiths, University of London
  • The Danish National School of Performing Arts
  • Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema (Portugal)
  • Károli Gáspár University (Hungary)
  • University of the Arts London (current PhD partnership)

And we regularly contribute to projects like Performing International Plays, led by Dr. Margherita Laera and produced by Rachel Toogood – delivering school workshops based on translated texts. Read more here.

embassies & cultural bodies

Translation often sparks our partnerships with embassies and cultural institutions. Together, we’ve presented UK premieres, workshops, and industry events.

Previous partners include:

  • Flanders Literature and Flanders House – on an industry showcase at Soho Theatre: Playwriting from Flanders
  • Royal Danish Embassy – on an industry event and reading of The Earth’s Core by Simone Isabel Nørgaard, translated by Paul Russell Garrett
  • Romanian Cultural Institute – on the UK (and world) premiere of The Unburied by András Visky, translated by Jozefina Komporaly

These partnerships help spotlight playwrights and stories rarely seen or heard in English.

Closer to home, we’ve built relationships with Hackney-based artists, community groups, and spaces that have become part of our extended creative family.

We’ve worked on:

  • Site-responsive performances
  • Creative workshops for young people
  • Local training and development for artists

  • Centre 151 – where we regularly run workshops

Our base since 2014, the Rose Lipman Building, is more than a rehearsal space – it’s where we test ideas, host events, and connect with our neighbours. It’s shaped how we work and what we make.

While our roots are local, our work often travels – and we’ve collaborated with theatre venues such as Arcola Theatre, Omnibus Theatre, and Jermyn Street Theatre to bring plays in translation to wider audiences.
