Workshops, mentoring, and creative development for theatre-makers and translators

We met as actors, and everything else we’ve learned has been through doing. From day one, we needed space to try things out – to practise, experiment, and make mistakes. That spirit of ongoing learning has shaped Foreign Affairs from the beginning.

When we started out, so many doors felt closed – or didn’t even seem to exist. We want to change that. That’s why we run workshops, mentorships, artist opportunities, and create digital resources – to open up our practice and share what we’ve learned.

We aim to offer all our sessions free of charge to artists and practitioners. Whether you’re just starting out or building on what you’ve already learned, our sessions focus on peer learning and collaboration, grounded in the real-world practice of making theatre.

who facilitates

The people in the room shape the experience. Our learning programmes and workshops are led by Trine Garrett – always supported by Camila França – and delivered with a trusted network of artists, translators, and facilitators who embody the same spirit of care, experimentation, and collaboration that drives our wider work.

Depending on the programme, we co-design sessions with associate artists, long-term collaborators, and former participants – particularly on Make Theatre With…, where peer-led learning is central.

Many of our facilitators have been part of Foreign Affairs for years – as mentees, collaborators, or co-creators – and bring deep experience in theatre-making, translation, and inclusive practice. Each session is built with intention: rooted in lived experience and shaped by a commitment to open, shared practice.

Theatre Translator Mentorship
Our flagship programme for emerging theatre translators. Runs every other year and includes mentoring, workshops, and hands-on project work.

Make Theatre With…
Workshop programmes for early-career performers and theatre-makers aged 18–30. Run twice a year and designed to support creative exploration, collaboration, and skills development.

Shorter, often one-off opportunities to learn, play, and experiment – whether you’re curious about translation, building skills, or just want to try something new.

Theatre Translation Workshops
From introductory sessions to deeper explorations (like Working with Actors & Directors or Translator as Theatre-maker), these workshops are rooted in our own practice.

Theatre Translation Lab
Informal, peer-led sessions where experienced translators bring drafts, challenges, or questions – to workshop, problem-solve, and connect through shared practice.

FA Ensemble Workshops
Open versions of our in-house ensemble sessions – inviting a wider community to explore our collaborative ways of working.

We usually send out one newsletter a month – unless we’re in the thick of a project, in which case you might hear from us a little more often. It’s a personal update from Camila and Trine, with stories, news, and what’s inspiring us right now.

You can also find us on X, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. While we do share updates there, social media isn’t always our top priority – the newsletter is where we keep things most consistent and personal.
