1. purpose and commitment

Foreign Affairs is a micro theatre company with an adventurous spirit, run by the creative duo Camila França and Trine Garrett. Our work focuses on theatre in translation, multicultural collaboration and exchange, and performance in unconventional spaces.

Our mission is to create an inclusive and accessible environment, whether online or in-person, where people from all walks of life can come together to explore diverse voices and perspectives. Through engaging and inspiring theatre, we aim to spark dialogue, provoke debate, and facilitate meaningful discourse on the issues that matter to our audiences, communities and society at large.

We’re committed to creating inclusive spaces and a community where everyone feels welcome, valued and respected. We believe that diversity strengthens our work, and we are dedicated to providing fair and inclusive opportunities for all.

Our policies and practices are guided by our core values:

1. Inclusivity & Collaboration:
We believe in creating an inclusive and collaborative environment where everyone feels valued, respected and connected. Our goal is to nurture a supportive community that embraces and celebrates cultural and linguistic diversity. Together, we collaborate, share ideas and appreciate different perspectives.

2. Accessibility & Empowerment:
We’re committed to ensuring accessibility for all. We strive to remove barriers, provide mentorship and training opportunities, engage with diverse communities, and empower individuals from underrepresented backgrounds. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment that amplifies voices and fosters empowerment.

3. Authenticity & Representation:
We value personal experiences and diverse perspectives. Our aim is to champion underrepresented groups, challenge stereotypes, and foster intercultural understanding through translation. We strive to inspire empathy and celebrate the richness of our diverse community.

4. Social Impact & Advocacy:
Theatre is a powerful tool for social change, and we aim to use it effectively. We address pressing issues, amplify marginalised voices, and advocate for equality, justice, and inclusion within our diverse global community. Our mission is to make a lasting impact and drive positive change.

5. Adventurous & Boundary-Pushing:
We’re not afraid to break free from artistic conventions. We encourage exploration of unconventional spaces, innovative storytelling, diverse collaborations, and translated works. Join us on this exciting journey of continuous learning, growth, and creative exploration.

2. definitions and scope

We acknowledge that individuals and groups have experienced oppression based on various factors, including but not limited to the protected characteristics defined by the Equality Act 2010 (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation). We are committed to treating everyone fairly and with dignity and respect, ensuring that no one is treated unfairly based on any of these factors or any other aspect of their demographic or identity.

3. legal compliance:

We are committed to complying with all relevant laws and regulations regarding equity, diversity, and inclusion. We actively seek to understand and adhere to legal obligations related to discrimination, harassment, and equal opportunity.

4. responsibilities and accountability:

All members of FA, including leadership, staff, freelance practitioners, and partners, share responsibility for advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion goals. We promote a culture of accountability and encourage individuals to report any incidents or concerns related to discrimination, harassment or unfair treatment.

5. recruitment and hiring practices:

As an employer and service provider, we are committed to implementing fair hiring practices and proactively seeking out diverse talent. We collaborate with organisations that champion diversity to share open calls and job opportunities, fostering a more inclusive and diverse workforce. Our commitment to fairness and adherence to regulations is of paramount importance.

6. equal opportunity & equitable treatment:

We are dedicated to providing equal opportunities for participation and advancement in all aspects of our work. We ensure that all individuals are treated fairly and without discrimination based on their protected characteristics or any other aspect of their demographic or identity.

7. code of behaviour and education:

We have established a code of behaviour that promotes respect, inclusivity, and equality within our community. We encourage ongoing learning and self-education to enhance understanding of unconscious bias, diversity awareness, and inclusive practices. Through continuous professional development, we strive to deepen our understanding of systemic inequalities and actively work towards dismantling them.

8. accessibility provisions and inclusive measures:

As a theatre company that operates in community and unconventional spaces, we are dedicated to making our performances and programs accessible to all. We acknowledge that some of the spaces we work in may have limitations in terms of accessibility due to their age or design. However, we are committed to finding practical solutions and taking proactive measures to address accessibility challenges.

9. reporting and investigation procedures:

We take reports of discrimination, harassment, or unfair treatment seriously. If you experience or witness any such incidents, please inform us directly by contacting us at team@foreignaffairs.org.uk. We will handle all reports confidentially and promptly.

Upon receiving a report, we will:

  • Listen & Document: We will listen to your concerns and document the details of the incident.
  • Investigation (if necessary): If the reported incident requires further investigation, we will conduct a fair and impartial investigation, considering all available evidence and interviewing involved parties.
  • Response & Action: Once the investigation is complete, we will take appropriate action to address the situation. This may involve implementing corrective measures, providing support, or taking disciplinary actions as deemed necessary.
  • Confidentiality: We will handle all reports and investigations with utmost confidentiality, respecting the privacy and rights of all parties involved.

We are committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment, and we encourage open communication. Your feedback is important to us, and we appreciate your trust in our commitment to addressing any issues that arise.
