Every month we share our upcoming plans as well as offer insights into our hopes and dreams for the future. We hope you enjoy!
September had a bit of a back-to-school feel as we as we kickstarted our theatre translator programmes (the Mentorship and the Lab) and a new season of ensemble workshops. It’s been great to get back into the room – albeit a virtual one – to work with some of our favourite theatre-makers, translators and performers, and together we’ve discovered no less than nine plays from around the globe in the month of September.
This month, after a long break away, we’re happy to be returning to our beloved basement studio at the Rose Lipman Building in Haggerston, where we’ve been based since 2014. But it isn’t without a touch of sadness that we make our return, as at this time of the year, we’d normally be starting rehearsals for our autumn production, which we had to postpone indefinitely earlier this year. There is nothing quite like the first day of rehearsals when the scripts are hot off the press, the excitement of the actors is palpable, and the possibilities are endless. More than anything, we dream of a first day of rehearsals in the not so distant future …
In the meantime, we continue to explore the online space and we’re excited to be taking part in the first Migrants in Theatre London Town Hall, Friday 16 October, 13:00 – 15:00. Migrants in Theatre (MiT) is a UK-wide movement campaigning for greater representation of first-generation migrant theatre artists based in the UK, which we’ve been part of since its conception. We’re beyond proud to be part of this hugely important movement, which is close to our hearts, and we look forward to sharing more about the movement as it gains traction. You can read more about MiT and sign up to the event .
We are, of course, also looking forward to continuing our work on the aforementioned training programmes this month, which are all being delivered online this season. Although we’ve been excited about the digital format of the Mentorship and the Lab from the get-go, we’ve nonetheless been a little apprehensive as to whether the activities would translate (wink wink) to a virtual space. However our team and the participants have all embraced the online space beautifully.
As we’re not spending our autumn rehearsing days on end, we’re dreaming of long walks in the Walthamstow Wetlands, of drinking red wine with loved ones at imaginary fireplaces and of reading plays that tell stories from afar and give insights into worlds beyond our own.
